Former NYC public school teacher Dermot Smyth is running for City Council in Queens’ 30th District.

With over 30 years living in the neighborhood and as a 25-year educator and labor leader, Dermot is running to fight for rational common sense solutions in City Hall and to be a strong advocate for Council District 30.

ABOUT DERMOT

Dermot was raised in Ireland, in the village of Rathcoole in County Dublin. He moved to New York when he was 20 and began working on a series of construction sites and as a school custodial worker. Like many who came over in the 1980s, Dermot came seeking opportunity and a better quality of life.

After earning his BA and MA from Queens College, Dermot began his teaching career in 2000. Involved in public education for the last 26 years, Dermot first taught 8th-grade social studies in District 24 for nine years at Intermediate School 5 in Elmhurst. From there, he began his work for the United Federation of Teachers, overseeing the Queens leaves department while also becoming the lead UFT political strategist.

Over the last 16 years, Dermot has worked with elected officials, community groups, and local leaders to promote the issues most important to our public schools. During this time, Dermot has earned the respect of elected officials, union members, and community leaders both here in Queens and across New York City by advocating for our educators and our schools.

Dermot brings with him a unique background in city politics, with experience that makes him the best choice to lead this district, protect our neighborhoods, and be a powerful voice for the needs of our families who call District 30 their home.

Dermot has two children, Meagan and Ryan.
